Academic boycott of Israel supported by Cornell professors!

Two days after the American Studies Association voted by a wide margin to endorse the academic boycott of Israel, Professor Eric Cheyfitz of Cornell University spoke in support of the boycott on Democracy Now!. Prof. Cheyfitz, who teaches American literature, American Indian literature, and federal Indian law in Cornell’s English department, has also been a strong and principled critic of Cornell University’s collaboration with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. In his statement of endorsement of the ASA boycott, he links settler colonialism in North America to Israeli settler colonialism in Palestine: “It is worth noting in this respect that just as the myth of American exceptionalism seeks to erase the genocide and ongoing settler colonialism of Indigenous peoples here in the United States so the myth of Israeli exceptionalism seeks to erase Israeli colonialism in Palestine and claim original rights to Palestinian lands.” This is a position he has elaborated in detail in an article in volume 3 of Cornell SJP’s Notes on Palestine/Israel (2012). Cornell SJP thanks and applauds Prof. Cheyfitz for his principled stand and compelling support for the academic boycott.
